I am curious if your writing ever makes you feel like you just know? You seem to just know the perfect combo of words to make a person really feel what you’re feeling.
You are such an engaging writer, I loved this piece! I relate to both you and your friends - I used to be someone who didn’t just know, and now am someone who lives entirely from those feelings. The earlobe part of the story was funny, but also made me cringe if it was real, bc that would never set someone up to connect with their intuition!
I do emotional and spiritual health work (like an alternative to therapy) so I work with people on this all the time. I’d like to offer some unsolicited thoughts on this topic :) … Many, many people (I’d say almost all) are innately intuitive, but don’t feel it and can’t hear it. There is nothing wrong or defective with them, and I don’t think it’s as simple as believing (though mindset can help).
For those who do wish to connect with their intuition and feel that certainty and self trust that comes with it, I believe it all comes from connecting with the body. Your body is where the “I just knew” feeling comes from. Our body’s are vastly intelligent, but like any other relationship, if you stop asking them “how do you feel about this”, they will stop telling you very much. (Think of a neighbor that you sort of ignored for 20 years - if you suddenly want them to tell you everything about how they are doing, you’ll need to rebuild the relationship for a while.) So the way to build it is two fold - ask your body regularly (like daily!) how are you feeling, and listen… to the hunger, tiredness, temperature, excitement, muscle sensations, etc. And if the body needs anything (like to pee or stretch) do it! And then when you go into certain environments or meet people, pause and notice what you are feeling (eg going into work, a first date, seeing your best friend, making a dreaded call, getting great news). Notice how the body feels differently in different situations. You’ll be able to start to link certain sensations with certain feelings. This is how you can tell you get really good vibes from someone, or that something is really off, even before the logical mind catches up. Your body communicates to you. Over months and then years, you’ll get tons of info.
Lastly, I’ve had a number of times where I felt strongly, and where I felt like I “just knew” and I can’t always tell the difference! Sometimes I’m right! Sometimes I’m not. I am usually always right that something or someone is significant, and not always what the outcome will be. I think that’s usually the case for even very intuitive people. One thing though - we make decisions right. We meet the right person or the right job, and we make it the love of our lives or the right opportunity. And when we just “know” to quit our jobs as lawyers or call off a wedding (both experiences I’ve had based on the knowing feeling) we make those right too by committing to our new path and ensuring that the decision works out by doing everything to becoming the best version. Few things are definitely right and wrong, so there is a lot of room to play with :)
Ivey and Isabel needs to be the name of a movie or a book or a store or something.
I share similar qualities with you - I'm a researcher through and through. Pros/cons list running through my head at all times that I will share aloud with multiple people for weeks on end before I've made my decision, yes, check.
BUT, I also hugely believe in the woo-woo of it all. And it's checked out for me in the past. I wrote a Substack recently about this:
I was laid off at 33 weeks pregnant, but I just knew everything would be okay. My dream job reached out to me 3 months postpartum, got the job.
We put an offer in on a house, didn't get it, couldn't stop thinking about it, kept telling friends about it, the offer ended up being withdrawn and despite having received multiple offers originally, the sellers reached back out to us, and we got the house.
My second baby's due date was in December, but I kept feeling like she'd actually come in November. Got a fortune cookie in June saying, "A special someone will enter your life in November." She arrived November 21st.
I read this somewhere in the past in terms of connecting to your intuition:
Think about something you love - a food, a place, a person. Notice how that feels in your body.
Then think about something you hate - whatever it may be. Notice how that feels in your body.
That is your intuition, your gut. Follow those feelings.
Kait…. I love you and your November baby. Thinking about peanut butter, thinking about sending Venmo requests, understanding. THANK you for reading xoxoxo
This left me speechless wow i enjoyed it so much and I’m simultaneously realizing i don’t know if ive ever “just known” and now i need to do a deep internal dive on what that feels like in my own body (or earlobes)
Such a stunning piece. I often “just know” that after thinking about someone who I usually haven’t been in touch with, I’m going to run into them. Sometimes within minutes. It’s inexplicable.
Your writing is so enthralling! I totally get you, not just because it's written in a totally gripping way, but because i also have never felt 'the feeling' my intuition is terrible and i just try to get by with what feels the closest morally but never sentimentally because i just have no idea. I've been trying to be more in touch with myself, but it feels like something you either have or you don't, and i definitely do not. I have tried manifesting so much, and it never feels like i quite got what i wanted but in the end, i'm always happy with how my life turns out. Maybe it's not so bad to not have a feeling, and i can just do what feels right for me in the meantime (i still hope it might come one day, i might even start meditating just for a one chance encounter with 'just knowing')
Thank you so much for writing this!! It genuinly warmed my heart to read you 🫶

See and this is why $500 makes sense. Beautiful. Thank you!!
A time I just knew: I entered a radio contest to meet Justin Bieber and no joke I knew I won. It was the craziest thing. Witch powers exist
This is literally so you
